Calendar of Events, version 2.2

Here is a very slight change in the schedule-- note what happens the week of February 15 and beyond. This schedule is current as of February 12, but keep in mind that there will probably be more changes coming.


January 6: First day of class (oops, snow day!)


January 11: The real first day of class! Discuss course syllabus and requirements. Homework: Be sure to sign up for the class electronic mailing list. Send a short (a couple sentences) message to the mailing list. Write a short autobiography (two or three pages, typed and double-spaced) and bring it with you to Thursday's class. Visit the class web site, print off a copy of the personal statment assignment, and bring it with you to Thursday's class.

January 13: Go over short autobiographies. In-class work on issues of audience. The personal statement assignment discussed.


January 18: Discuss "Writing the Personal Statement" from the Purdue OWL (web site). "What is Good Writing?" (e-reserves), and the selection from Andrea Lunsford and Robert Connors The St. Martin's Handbook (e-reserves). In-class work on personal statement assignment.

January 20: Discuss Larry Beason's "Ethos and Error: How Business People React to Errors" (e-reserves). Discuss peer review activities.


January 25: Peer review workshop of personal statement: Come to class with FOUR copies of a draft of your personal statement to share with others in class. Begin discussion of email writing assignment.

January 27: Meet in the Halle Library, room G07A! This is in the basement or "ground level" of the building. In-class work on email writing and email software. Discuss "A Beginner's Guide to Effective Email" by Kaitlin Duck Sherwood. Email writing assignment introduced.


February 1: The personal statement is assignment is due! Discuss Email etiquette rules for effective email replies and"Email Etiquette" from OWL at Purdue University. Send an email to the class emailing list BEFORE class discussing these readings.

February 3: Peer review workshop of email assignment: Come to class with FOUR copies of a draft of your assignment to share with others in class.


February 8: Letter of complaint assignment introduced. Read "Types of Business Letters," from Phillip Kolin's Successful Writing At Work. Available via e-reserves. Homework assigned.

February 10: Email assignment due! Discuss previously assigned homework and writing.


February 15: Peer review workshop for letter of complaint assignment. Come to class with FOUR copies of a draft of your assignment to share with others in class.

February 17: Proof-reading and revision workshop. Come to class today with the original version of your personal statement (with my comments), the email assignment (what I handed back to you), and a draft of your letter of complaint. Homework assigned.


February 22: Letter of complaint assignment due! Discussion of homework. Discussion and in-class work on response to a letter of complaint ("adjustment letter") assignment.

February 24: Peer review workshop for response to a letter of complaint assignment. Come to class with FOUR copies of a draft of your assignment to share with others in class.


March 1 and March 3: No Class-- Winter Break!


March 8: Response to a letter of complaint assignment due!

March 10:Read "How to Get a Job: Resumes, Letters, Applications, Interviews." On E-Reserves, pages 122-140. Send an email to the class emailing list BEFORE class discussing these readings.


March 15: Read"How to Get a Job: Resumes, Letters, Applications, Interviews." On E-Reserves, pages 140-155. Send an email to the class emailing list BEFORE class discussing these readings. Homework assigned.

March 17: No Class meeting today. However, browse the web sites Monster.com and Hotjobs.com and send an email to the class emailing list BEFORE classtime this day to discuss these sites. Informal report assignment reading TBA.


March 22: Peer review workshop for resume and letter of application assignment. Come to class with FOUR copies of a draft of your assignment to share with others in class. Informal report assignment introduced.

March 24: Discuss the informal report assignment and readings.


March 29: Resume and application letter due! Informal report assignment workshop. Discuss the collaborative recommendation report assignment.

March 31: Informal report assignment due! Discuss "Collaborative Writing and Meetings at Work" and "Writing Careful Long Reports," both from Kolin's Successful Writing at Work and available via eReserves. Send an email to the class emailing list BEFORE class discussing these readings.


April 5: Computer Lab day: meet in room 111 of Halle Library. About PowerPoint. Discuss "Learning to Love PowerPoint" and "PowerPoint is Evil," both linked from the class homepage. Send an email to the class emailing list BEFORE class discussing these readings. In-class work on Recommendation Reports.

April 7: In-class work on Recommendation Reports.


April 12: Presentations of Recommendation Reports. Three (or so) groups will present today. The report and materials are due on the day your group gives its presentation.

April 19: Last day of classes! Discussion of the revision process.

April 21 (the end of time): The time of our final is April 21, 11:3- am to 1:00 pm.We won't be meeting during our final; however, this is the deadline for any revisions or other work for the course.
