Response to the Complaint Letter (or the "Adjustment Letter") Assignment

This assignment has three parts:

First, write a letter responding to the complaint letter you receive from one of your classmates (see below) that responds positively to the complaint. (This is what Kolin calls the "Yes" letter).

Second, write a letter responding to the complaint letter you receive from one of your classmates that responds negatively to the complaint. (This is what Kolin calls the "No" letter).

Third, write a memo from you to me where you describe the process of your writing for this assignment.

Here are some things to think about:

• Your letters will be in response to a complaint letter from one of your classmates. I will randomly distribute copies of the complaint letters on February 22. Because of this, you should keep in mind the very real audience of your adjustment letter: the person who wrote the complaint in the first place.
• Obviously, you will have to take some liberties with the facts in how you answer these complaint letters since you (probably) aren't affiliated with the company organization to which the complaint was directed. I'd encourage you to be creative, but don't be too creative (for example, don't blame the mishap on aliens from outer space.)
• We will have a peer review for this assignment on February 24, and the final version of the assignment is due on March 8!
